Description

The Lord Ninian Crichton Stuart Memorial Chapel, located within the House of Falkland Estate, was designed by Reginald Fairlie and construction began in 1912, with a date of 1916. The chapel is unfinished, featuring four bays in a Gothic style, and is roofless with crenellations and buttresses. It is constructed from squared and snecked grey sandstone with ashlar margins. The building has a deep base course and a moulded band course above it. A machicolated moulded cornice with semi-circular corbel brackets is present, along with stepped side and corner buttresses, some topped with pyramidal caps. The windows are chamfered tripartite openings with elaborate tracery, and there are waterspouts.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, the design is nearly symmetrical. It features a central round-arched entrance doorway that is slightly advanced, complete with a decorative iron gate and a moulded hood-mould. Flanking buttresses are present, and the date 1916 is inscribed above on the left. Above the entrance, there is a segmental-arched window opening flanked by a pair of empty niches.

The north elevation has an advanced two-bay section on the left. The east elevation is buttressed and has no openings. The south elevation features a crow-stepped gable on the far right.

Inside, the chapel consists of a nave and aisle with four bays. The walls are made of rubble, and there are round- and pointed-arched openings along with ashlar piers. Several family memorial plaques can be found within the interior.
