Description
20 Clay Loan in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey house that is part of a small terrace. It has a rectangular plan and features a symmetrical, plain classical design. The building is harled, with windows positioned close to the eaves.
On the south elevation, the bays are arranged in groups of three, with Number 18 on the left and Number 20 on the right, both having identical arrangements. There is a step leading to a modern, part-glazed door located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors flanking the central door.
The east side elevation of Number 20 is blank, featuring a gablehead stack above and a single-storey projection to the right. The west side elevation adjoins Number 16.
The house has replacement two-pane timber sash and case windows, modern grey slate roofs with stone ridges, stone mutual skews, harled corniced mutual stacks, and a similar gablehead stack on the east side. It also has uPVC rainwater goods. The interiors were not seen as of 1998.
