Description

3 Franklin Road in Stromness is a house dated 1887, featuring later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical house with a rectangular plan. The design includes advanced, finialled canted, corbelled, and gabled bays on either side of a gabled central bay, with a piended-roofed addition at the rear. The building is constructed from stugged cream sandstone ashlar with grey sandstone dressings and is set on rising ground to the northwest.

The principal elevation on the southeast features a roll-moulded doorway with long and short margins in the central bay at ground level, leading to a timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight. Above this is a window at the first floor, along with a date panel in the gablehead. The canted bays have a three-light window at ground level and a single window at the first floor on either side.

The northwest rear elevation includes a single-storey, two-bay piended-roofed addition offset to the left, with a window in the main block to the outer right. A continuous long box dormer spans the entire pitch above.

The southwest and northeast side elevations are blank, featuring multi-flue gablehead stacks above. The windows consist of two-pane timber sash and case at ground level, while fixed timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights are found elsewhere. The roof is covered with purple slate, featuring a stone ridge, coped skews, ovolo-moulded skewputts, a corniced ashlar gablehead stack, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of rubble walls with a rubble cope along the southeast boundary. There are cement-rendered and lined square-plan gatepiers with a linking pediment and a boarded gate. The property is further enhanced by cast-iron barleysugar railings with a timber handrail on the ridge cope, linking the gate to the front door, and a low wall flanking the stone flight leading to the door.
