Description
This building is an outbuilding located at 22-24 Alfred Street in Stromness, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with some alterations. It is a two-storey, four-bay rectangular-plan house that is nearly symmetrical and situated at the end of a terrace. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar long and short margins around the openings. There is a rectangular-plan outbuilding set back to the north.
On the principal elevation facing east, there is a replacement part-glazed timber door with a rectangular fanlight at the ground level, located in the center, with a window above it on the first floor. To the right, there is a window on each floor, while the left bay has a blocked doorway at the ground level and a window on the first floor. Additionally, there is a window at the ground level in the outer left bay.
The north side elevation features a two-bay gabled wall, with a window in the ground bay to the right and a window in the gable shoulder of the left bay, topped by a gablehead stack. The building predominantly has later two-pane timber sash and case windows, along with fixed small-pane and 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the north elevation, and a rooflight to the right. The roof has been replaced with grey slate, featuring concrete skews, a stone ridge, coped harled stacks at the gabled ends, plain cans, cast-iron downpipes, and uPVC gutters.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The outbuilding is a single-storey structure with a pitched roof, built of roughly coursed rubble, located to the north of the main house with its gable end facing the street. It has a boarded door set to the left on the north elevation, a graded stone slab roof, and a stone ridge, with a short rubble wall projecting north from the north elevation.
