Papdale House, Berstane Road, Kirkwall

Papdale House, located on Berstane Road in Kirkwall, is a later 18th century classical house that has undergone some alterations and additions. This two-storey, three-bay building features a symmetrical rectangular plan, with a prominent central bay that has a ball-finialled pediment and a gabled entrance porch at the rear (northwest). The exterior is harled with sandstone ashlar dressings and includes a corniced eaves course and plain margins around the windows.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a window on each floor in the advanced central bay, topped by an oculus in the pediment. Each of the flanking bays also has a window on both floors.

The northwest (rear) elevation includes a window in the central bay of the entrance porch at ground level, a boarded door with a rectangular fanlight in the left return, and a window in the right return. Above, there is a window at the first floor, and a window in each bay to the left.

The southwest (side) elevation features a small window at ground level in the right bay, and a window at ground level in the left bay, with a gablehead stack above.

On the northeast (side) elevation, there is a window on each floor in each bay, with a sandstone plaque located between the ground-level windows and a gablehead stack above.

The house predominantly has 18-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a stone ridge, harled coped gablehead stacks, polygonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
