Description

The boundary wall and gate-piers at Daisybank, East Road, Kirkwall, date from around 1830, with a possible 18th-century range at the rear. This two-storey, three-bay house features a plain classical style with a symmetrical square plan and a piended roof, complemented by paired stacks. At the rear, there is a single storey and attic range with crowstepped gables. The exterior is finished with modern harl and cement dressings, including a base course and eaves course, and the openings have plain margins.

On the west (principal) elevation, a short stone flight of steps leads to a doorway with an architrave and cornice, located in the central bay. Above this doorway is a window, with additional windows in each bay on both floors. The north (side) elevation has two bays, with a screen wall extending to the left, and a window in each bay on both floors. The south (side) elevation mirrors this with two bays in the main block and a two-bay projection to the right. Each bay contains a window on both floors, and there are ground and attic windows in the projection that break the eaves.

The east (rear) elevation features a timber-panelled door flanked by a window in a flat-roofed entrance porch at the ground level in the central bay. There is a window in the right return and a tall stair window above. To the right of the porch, there are two ground-level windows and a smaller window between them at the first floor. An attic window is located in the crowstepped gable of the projection to the left, with a wide doorway and window in the right return.

The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, including lying-pane and two- and four-pane timber sash and case windows. The traditional roof is graded stone slate, matching the projection, and both the main house and projection have paired, harled, corniced stacks. The rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC.

Inside, the property features timber skirting boards, architraved and panelled doors, and a central stone staircase with plain timber balusters and a timber handrail with a spiral terminal. Decorative cornices adorn the main rooms, and there is a segmental-arched doorway with a decorative fanlight in the first-floor hall that connects the main house with the earlier projection to the rear.
