Description
The doocot at Papdale House on Berstane Road in Kirkwall dates from the later 18th century and is associated with the walled garden, which is likely from the same period. The structure has a rectangular plan with a north wall that is curved in a semi-polygonal shape. There are central side gates on both the east and west long sides. The rubble walls may have been heightened, as indicated by several masonry courses visible on the east and south walls.
The doocot itself is located at the southeast corner and has a square plan. It is currently roofless and rises above the height of the adjacent walls. The south elevation features a blocked doorway and a round-arched opening.
