Description

Park Cottage, located on Berstane Road in Kirkwall, is an earlier 19th century single-storey and attic cottage with a symmetrical square plan and a pyramidal roof. It features a box dormer and a rectangular addition to the rear, which dates from around 1970. The exterior is harled.

The principal southwest elevation has a short stone flight of steps leading to a timber-panelled door with a lying-pane fanlight, situated in the central bay. There is a window in each of the flanking bays, and above, two flat-roofed box dormers are evenly spaced.

On the northwest side elevation, the main house has two bays, with a two-bay addition to the left. Each bay of the main house contains a window, while the addition has a window in each bay, set close to the outer left.

The southeast side elevation features a modern uPVC-framed conservatory that spans the left bay, with a window in the bay to the right. There is also a modern glazed door with two windows to the right of the addition.

The northeast rear elevation shows a two-bay gabled addition with a window in each bay.

The original house has lying-pane timber sash and case windows, timber-framed box dormers, and timber-framed windows in the addition with top-hung upper lights. The original house has a traditional graded stone slated roof, while the addition has modern asbestos tiles. A harled, corniced multi-flue central stack is present, along with predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.

Inside, the cottage features a lying-pane vestibule door with an original brass Art Nouveau latch, timber skirting boards, fluted architraves around timber-panelled doors, and extant cornices and shutters.
