Description

Nouster Stores, located in Papa Westray, date from the later 18th century and consist of two two-storey kelp stores with forestairs leading to the southeast gables. The buildings are constructed from exposed local rubble stone with slaister pointing.

The northwest store features a southwest (principal) elevation with a central door and flanking windows, although the openings have been altered. Above, there are two first-floor windows centered over the door. A forestair is set back to the right, providing access from the southwest via an open dog-leg stone stair. The northwest elevation has a plain gable with a large entrance at ground level, which includes modern sliding double doors, and a lean-to to the left with another large entrance. The northeast elevation has a central door, a blocked-up window to the right, and a first-floor window centered above the door. A lean-to extends the length of the store, featuring a central door and a window to the left. The southeast elevation has a forestair to the left leading to a first-floor door, with a ground-floor window to the right of the stairs. The roofless store has crowstepped gables, and the adjoining lean-to retains some slates.

Inside the northwest store, the ground floor has exposed stone, while the first-floor walls are plastered. There are central fireplaces on both the ground and first floors in the southeast gable, and flagstone flooring remains in some areas.

The southeast store has a plain southwest (principal) elevation with a large central replacement door and stone steps to the right leading to a first-floor door in the southeast gable. The northwest elevation is plain, and the northeast elevation features a blocked-up central door with a window to the right. The southeast elevation has a forestair leading to an off-center first-floor door to the right. The roof has been replaced with corrugated material, and the interior was not seen in 2000.

To the rear of the southeast store, there is a tall stone-walled enclosure. Additionally, there is an L-plan pier to the east of the stores, made of flagstones, with two sets of steps built into the wall to the east and a later wall and slip to the west of the wall.
