Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay manse, likely dating from around 1843, originally built as a residence for a Free Church minister. It features a rectangular main block and two single-storey wings to the rear (west side), creating an overall U-shaped layout. The main block is harled with some ashlar dressings.
The east (principal) elevation has a central entrance with a boarded timber door and a rectangular fanlight with patterned glazing. There are windows on each floor and one above, flanking the entrance. The west elevation is characterized by its round-arched stair window in the center of the main block. Blank gable ends of the single-storey wings project to either side, with the wing to the right projecting further and incorporating a short addition set at a right angle. The right return to the western wing has two entrances with boarded timber doors, as well as a garage entrance. The left return also includes an entrance. The north elevation has a window to each floor on the right side of the main block, with a single-storey wing adjoining to the right and a small window to the left. The south elevation has a window to each floor on the left of the main block, with a single-storey wing adjoined to the left, a later water tank adjoining to the right, two entrances with boarded timber doors, and a projecting gable end of an addition to the outer left.
The windows in the main block are 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the stair window has lying-pane glazing. The main block has a piended Welsh slate roof, while the single-storey wings have standard pitched Welsh slate roofs (part of the roof on the south wing has been replaced with corrugated asbestos). The gable of the single-storey wing to the right on the west elevation faces south and has a crowstepped gable and a flagstone roof. The main block has a pair of centrally positioned ridge stacks with band courses, and the north single-storey wing has a gablehead stack with a band course. Round cans originally topped these stacks, but are now missing from the single-storey wing.
The interior of the manse remains substantially unaltered and retains its original plan. A large, open-well staircase features a cast-iron balustrade. The ground floor doorcases have circular motifs at the arrises, and the doors are four-panel timber doors.
Coursed rubble garden walls with rubble coping enclose rectangular-plan plots to the south and east. The front garden is enclosed by square-plan piers with pyramid coping and a replacement timber gate. Inserted gateways are located on the south and east sides.
