Walled Garden, Holland House, Papa Westray

The Walled Garden at Holland House in Papa Westray dates from around 1830 and features a rectangular plan with a central dividing wall that runs east to west along its long axis. The structure is built from coursed rubble. There are entrances to the northern section, including one on the west side and another at the eastern end of the north side, both fitted with timber gates. The entrance on the east side is without a lintel and appears to have been enlarged or possibly inserted.

The central dividing wall has two entrances; the one on the west side lacks a lintel and may have been inserted, as the wall is lower in height at this point. There is a blocked opening at the western end of the southern wall, which pertains to the southern section. The northern wall of the northern section is slightly taller and is part of the boundary wall, featuring a raised section with curved sides at the center. This section may have served as a heated wall and incorporates two raised chimneys, likely intended for heating an adjacent lean-to greenhouse, which has been replaced. Additionally, there is an entrance with a part-glazed timber door on the right return. A small lean-to chamber for heating is located on the northern side of the wall, adjacent to the road, with an entrance that has a timber door on the left return and boarded windows on the front and right returns.
