Description

Citadel Farmhouse is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay farmhouse that forms the eastern end of an H-plan farm complex, which includes long single-storey byres in the center and a two-storey barn to the west. The building is harled, with harl-pointed rubble used for the farm buildings. The first-floor windows are positioned close under the eaves.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a boarded window in the gabled porch at the center of the ground floor, with a boarded door to the right and a window to the left. Each bay flanking the porch has a window on both floors.

The west (rear) elevation features a two-storey, two-bay section of the barn that abuts the single-storey byre to the east. Each bay has a window on both floors, set closely together.

On the south (side) elevation, there is a boarded door to the right in the single-storey recessed byre, with a window at ground level in the gabled barn to the outer right. The gabled farmhouse elevation has a window on each floor to the right, with a gablehead stack above.

The north (side) elevation has two boarded doors evenly spaced, with a boarded window flanking each to the right of the central recessed byre. There is also a window at the first floor of the gabled barn elevation to the outer right.

The farmhouse predominantly features four-pane timber-framed windows. The roof is covered with Caithness stone slates, while the porch and the west pitch of the farmhouse are finished with Welsh purple slate. The stone ridge is complemented by concrete skews, and the building has harled rubble with corniced gablehead stacks on the north and south sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior of the farmhouse is not visible as of 1997, but the barn roof has exposed rafters and collars, and the internal partitions are formed by horizontal timber slats.
