Description

The lodge at Knadherhill Cemetery in Irvine is an earlier 20th-century building designed in an asymmetrical Scottish 17th century style. It is constructed from squared and coursed dark red sandstone and features crowstepped gables with plain margins.

On the southwest elevation, the entrance door is set within a bowed porch that has a battlement in the re-entrant angle of two short wings. Above the door, there is an armorial panel encased in a square, moulded surround, topped by a corbelled parapet. A narrow window is located to the side, while a bay to the right includes a gable end with a canted stone piended window and a slit window in the gablehead.

The northwest elevation consists of three bays, with plain windows in the center and two windows in the flanking gable ends. There is a raised and projecting stack that rises from the ground to the gablehead in the bay to the right.

The northeast and southeast elevations do not display any baronial features. The building has modern plate glass replacement windows and a grey slate roof.

The interior was not seen in 1997.

Flanking the carriage entrance are paired gatepiers that provide pedestrian access on each side. These gatepiers are made of dark red sandstone ashlar and are square with a base, featuring a panelled body and a cornice that supports pyramidal caps on ball feet. There is a low wall to the left and right, with outlying piers that do not have pyramidal caps. The entrance includes two-leaf vehicular gates, a single pedestrian gate, and iron railings.
