Description

The Brisbane Aisle, located to the west of Skelmorlie Aisle in Largs, is a small 17th century free-standing burial vault. It was originally built for the Shaws of Kelsoland and became the burial vault for the Brisbanes after 1695. The vault has a rectangular plan and a gabled roof, constructed from finely squared ashlar masonry. It features bolection moulding at the wallhead, as well as cavetto moulded skewputts and apex stones. The main structure is believed to date back to 1634, as indicated by a heraldic datestone on the east elevation above a sealed portal. This heraldic panel is inscribed with 'P.S' and 'I.S' for the Shaws of Kelsoland, along with armorial devices: on the left, the Shaw family (represented by mullets) and the Montgomerie of Braidstone (represented by annulets). A carved armorial on the west side bears the initials 'P.S./I.M./I.S'. The vault has a slab roof that is at a lower pitch than the steeply-pitched gable ends, likely due to repairs made in the late 17th century. Additionally, there are 19th century exterior wall-mounted marble memorial panels with block pediments.
