Description
The Church of Scotland in Miavaig, Lewis, was built around 1843 as a Free Church on reclaimed land at the head of a sheltered sea loch. It is believed to have been reduced in size around 1900 or earlier, and the sizes of the windows and the unusual steel-trussed roof members suggest that significant alterations occurred long after its original construction. The church is a plain gabled box-type structure with dry-dashed walls, painted detailing, and large rectangular windows. It has a slate roof. The west entrance gable features a painted doorway with a window above it, which contains coloured glass, and an apex belfry. Inside, the church has a plain interior with timber V-lining on the walls, and a handsome pulpit, which may be an import, complete with a pilastered back-board and canopy above. The site is bounded by a rubble perimeter and retaining wall.
