Free Presbyterian Church, Matheson Road, Stornoway, Lewis

The Free Presbyterian Church on Matheson Road in Stornoway, Lewis, is a late 19th-century building situated on a corner site. It features a five-bay nave and a low structure, possibly a vestry, at the west gable, which has a three-bay front facing Scotland Street. This part connects to a modern hall, which also has a round-arched window in its front gable. The church has a modern dry-dash finish with painted ashlar margins and other details, including an open-domed apex belfry on the gabled main entrance front that faces Matheson Street. The entrance features a central two-leaf door, flanked by windows and a stepped three-light gallery window, all with small-paned glazing. There is a second door on the flank facing Scotland Street, which is square-headed and located between the fourth and fifth bays. The church has slate roofs, with barge-boarded and louvred dormer ventilators—two on the north side and one on the south. It is enclosed by cast-iron railed boundary walls, with an original two-leaf gateway and cast-iron piers at the main entrance.
