Description
99 Carnan in Eochar, Isle of South Uist, is a building that dates to perhaps the early 19th century and may have served as an inn or a ferryman's house. It is a single-storey structure featuring three wide bays and is designed in the Skye-type thatched cottage style. The walls are constructed of slightly battered rubble with curved angles. The central door is located on the east front, behind a harled lean-to porch. There are two windows in the west wall and a single window in the short south wall. The building has a single end chimney and an off-centre axial chimney stack. The marram thatch roof is secured with ropes and stone weights.
The interior, as seen in 1985, includes boarded ceilings and stone slabs laid over the inner corners to support the roof timbers.
It is important to note that the porch attached to the east elevation is excluded from the listing under Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
