'Town House', 16-18 Cromwell Street, Stornoway, Lewis

'Town House' at 16-18 Cromwell Street in Stornoway, Lewis, is a tall, three-storey building with an attic, possibly dating from the mid to late 19th century. It occupies a prominent, slightly skewed corner site and may incorporate a pre-existing structure. The building features simplified classical detailing and is rendered above the ground floor, which has been completely modernized at the front and partially on the north gable. There is an architraved tall doorway on the right-hand side, likely providing access to upper flats. The slate roofs include skylights, and cornices and strings divide the floors. The windows are aproned and architraved, with arched windows on the gable and a mix of arched and triangular heads to the architraves at the first floor on the front elevation, resembling simplified pediments. This elevation also features a shaped centre wall-head gable, with windows—mostly four-pane sashes—grouped in threes on either side of a blind centre. The apex stacks are all set on corbelled bases, similar to the treatment seen at 59 Cromwell Street, which is dated 1886.
