Description
The Lightkeepers Dwelling Houses in Breasclete, Lewis, were built in 1899 as houses for lighthouse keepers or coastguards. The building features a distinctive symmetrical design with a double-pile layout and crow-stepped gables on an M-shaped slated roof. The exterior is finished in a red brick-coloured harl with red ashlar dressings. It stands two storeys tall with a five-bay front, showcasing a heavy-bracketted eaves cornice and paired wall-head stacks positioned centrally. An archway above the central door includes a sculptured and painted tympanum, and there is a cill band at the first floor. The chimney stacks, which include end stacks, are topped with heavy caps and original red fireclay chimney cans that have fluted detailing. The windows have been modernized, but they were originally sash windows with four-pane glazing. The building also has flat-roofed low flanking wings that are similarly detailed. Surrounding the house is a large garden area enclosed by rubble walls, featuring stop-chamfered square gatepiers with caps that have trefoil detail, all painted. Additionally, there is a white-painted and fluted sundial on the property.
