26 James Street, Stornoway, Lewis

26 James Street in Stornoway, Lewis, is a symmetrical double villa built around 1883 to 1885, based on the style of nearby houses. This compact, two-storey building has an attic storey and features a three-bay front with paired inner doors. The division between the two houses is marked by a bipartite window above. The outer bays have canted ground floor windows, with the right side (No 27) still displaying its original cast-iron cresting. The first-floor windows extend above the eaves and are topped with finialed neo-Jacobean dormerheads. The villa is constructed from coursed rubble with squared dressings and painted details, although it has modern glazing. The skews are preserved only on the left side, and there are end stacks and a slate roof. Each outer bay has a flat-roofed dormer close to the roof ridge, with the right dormer retaining its original sash and case glazing, featuring three-pane upper and lower sashes. There are modern low additions recessed on each side of the building. The boundary wall is topped with spike-headed cast-iron railings and includes the original gates.
