Schoolhouse, Tarbert Primary School, Harris

Tarbert Primary School in Harris, likely built around 1880, consists of a school and a schoolhouse situated side by side, both designed in a similar architectural style featuring round-arched openings. The school has a simpler addition from the early 20th century and modern wings at the rear. The buildings are constructed from rubble with squared dressings and have slate roofs.

The schoolhouse is a single storey with an attic, featuring round-arched openings and two bays, with a wide gabled bay on the left. The ground floor has a bipartite window, and there is a doorway to the right with a gabled dormer above. The entrance includes a two-leaf boarded door topped by a three-pane semi-circular fanlight. The glazing throughout consists of sash windows with small, near-square panes, and the astragals have been removed from the dormer. The schoolhouse has end stacks.

The school was originally designed with a nearly symmetrical front, featuring a stepped three-light window in a wide central gable that projects from the main body of the building. The gables on either side are recessed, with a bipartite window on the left and a single window on the right. To the left of the main building, there is a modern slapping, and to the right, a link to the early 20th-century range, which has a three-bay L-plan front with flat-lintelled windows and concrete dressings. This range includes a modern porch in the re-entrant angle. The original building has roof ventilators and stacks, while modern glazing throughout is styled to match the traditional appearance.
