Description

Ardvourlie Castle is a white rendered, 2-storey and attic hunting lodge built in 1863. The compact structure features advanced gables and a tall, narrow tower, with plain elevations that are enhanced by uniformly placed windows. These windows have imported yellow ashlar dressings, including chamfered surrounds, crowstepped gables topped with ball finials, a corniced ashlar tripartite box window on the south side, and a Gibbsian doorpiece with a datestone.

The principal south elevation overlooks Ardvourlie Bay towards Seaforth Island. It has an advanced gable on the left with a central window on each floor, including a round-headed attic window. The middle section is 2-storey and features a box window, while the tall, narrow 3-stage tower is set back to the right and includes an entrance door. At the rear, there is a service court partly enclosed by a wall, which contains an L-plan single storey range made of exposed stone and imported slate.

The timber sash and case windows have been replaced with modern top-hung timber effect windows, although the attic light retains a sash and case window with 8-pane glazing. There is also a replacement door. The building has ashlar stacks and a grey slate roof. Inside, the detailing includes panelled shutters and doors, as well as cornice work.

The front of the property features a terraced garden and a slipway, along with a rubble-built driveway bridge to the north of the house. A stream runs beneath this bridge into an underground tunnel, which has stone lintels at either end and is evidently part of the designed landscape surrounding the lodge.
