Description
West Lodge at Brucklay Castle is a single-storey and basement structure built in the 1890s, possibly by architects Matthews and Mackenzie. This three-bay lodge features crowstepped gables and has been constructed from grey granite, accented with contrasting black Aberdeen bond and granite ashlar dressings. It includes a deep base course, a moulded cill course, corbels, stone mullions, chamfered arrises, and raked cills.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical and showcases a decorative cast-iron finial atop a slated timber porch. The porch has a braced gable and a round arch that leads to a broad panelled timber door, flanked by multi-paned, leaded, and coloured lights and fanlights. Each of the flanking bays features a single window that breaks the eaves, leading into a broken apex semicircular pediment topped with a thistle finial. The outer angles are rounded and corbelled, transitioning to a square shape near the eaves.
The north and south elevations are gabled and finialled, each featuring a stone-roofed canted window at the centre. The east elevation, which has been altered, is symmetrical with a raised basement. It has projecting outshot bays at the centre, including a ball-finialled gabled bay with a timber door at the basement level and a single window above, along with flanking windows and additional windows on the returns. The outer angles mirror those of the west elevation.
Most windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane or plate glass glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar ridge stacks with cans, some of which are polygonal. The interior of the lodge has been modernized.
