Description
A late 18th/early 19th century kiln barn, converted into a cottage on the Ballindalloch Castle estate. The two-storey house has an irregular four-bay east-facing facade. It is built of rubble with tooled granite dressings. An off-centre entrance is partially concealed by a glazed porch. A later entrance, originally serving the kiln, is located in the centre of the south gable, which is hipped, and has a small window above with chamfered margins. Granite window lintels retain signs where iron grills were formerly placed. Modern glazing has been installed. The building has end chimney stacks with prominent "thack stanes" and an inserted ridge stack. The roof is covered in graded Banffshire slate, hipped at the south.
The interior has been adapted to provide modern domestic accommodation within the former barn and threshing floor. The lower section of the original kiln is now used as a store and pantry, while the domed, brick-lined upper portion remains largely intact, featuring east, west, and south mural vents. The east and west vents are closed, but the south vent is glazed.
The cottage is situated on a ridge above the original home farm, designed to take advantage of the wind for winnowing. It is one of only two known examples of its type in the Moray district, the other being at Rothiemay.
