Description
Dated 1807, the General James Grant Mausoleum is a square grey granite ashlar structure with a vault, built to commemorate General James Grant, governor of Florida and Stirling Castle (born 1720, died 10 April 1806). The mausoleum has polished sandstone ashlar detailing for the wallhead cornice, plinth, and obelisk. Each face features a shallow advanced central portion, framing a blind, depressed arch containing a square-headed blind doorway. Rusticated quoins, a deep eaves band, a moulded eaves cornice, and a crenellated wallhead contribute to the design. A central square plinth on the roof originally supported a short obelisk with a draped urn in relief. An inscribed panel in Latin is on the west face, along with a moulded cornice. The entrance to the vault, located on the west side, contains a marble sarcophagus. According to local accounts, General Grant himself selected the site due to its favoured viewpoint. Following his death, Ballindalloch passed to George MacPherson of Invereshie, his great nephew. An obelisk originally stood on the roof plinth but fell and lies beside the mausoleum.
