Description
These mid-19th century stables and cottages are arranged in a U-plan, facing west. The main part of the building is a single-storey range with two-storey projecting wings. The walls are harled with ashlar detailing, and some areas have been painted. The outer wings have entranceways facing the courtyard, connected by a later addition of a canopy supported by slender cast-iron columns. The west-facing gables contain a bipartite window on the ground floor and a pointed-headed window on the first floor. Stable windows with lunette detailing are located on the south elevation, and a loft entrance breaks the wallhead at the rear. The windows have four panes of glass. Wallhead stacks rise from the building, and the roofs are slate. Designs for the stables were proposed by T. MacKenzie in 1847 and A. Ross in 1878, but it is not known if these schemes were implemented.
