Free Church, South Street, Elgin

The Free Church on South Street in Elgin was designed by architect Mr. Bisset and built between 1862 and 1863. It features a Gothic style and has a rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The gable end facing South Street includes paired doorways that are recessed under a moulded Gothic arch, which is supported by nook shafts and a centre colonette on the trumeau. Above the doorways, there are three trefoil lights in the tympanum, a string course at the impose level, and six arcaded lancets, two of which are blind, with nook shafts and a continuous hoodmould. A louvred bull's eye window is situated above, topped by a crocketted finial at the apex. The flanks facing Hall Place have five bays, featuring paired Gothic lancets and alternating buttresses. The building is further supported by angle buttresses and has a steeply pitched slate roof with lattice glazing. Inside, there is a simple Gothic galleried design, although the gallery is now divided by an internal screen.
