17 Batchen Street, Elgin

17 Batchen Street in Elgin is an early 19th-century house, featuring two storeys and a three-bay symmetrical rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed of sandstone rubble with stugged dressings and has raised window surrounds.

On the south elevation, there is a pitched roof brick porch that projects at the center. It has a timber panelled door with glazed upper panels, and there are single windows on the first floor above the porch and in the remaining bays on both floors.

The windows are timber sash and case, originally designed with 12 panes but now have 4 panes. The roof is covered with grey slate and features stone ridging, gablehead stacks, and stone skews.

Inside, the first-floor drawing room has a later decorative plaster ceiling that is deeply covered and includes an anthemion and palmetter central rose along with guilloche compartment divisions. The interior also features architraved panelled doors leading to presses, a pilastered timber fireplace with a cast-iron gate and decorative tiles, and a timber stair with balusters and a handrail.
