Description
Thunderton House, located at Thunderton Place on High Street in Elgin, dates from the early to mid-17th century, likely incorporating earlier work. The building was remodeled and reduced in size to its current L-plan configuration in 1822. It features a rubble construction with ashlar dressings and a slate roof.
The 17th-century elements are primarily visible on the south elevation, which includes four pedimented dormers adorned with monograms for Duffus, Dunbar, Innes, and Mackenzie. The north gable displays grouped rectangular and diagonally set stacks. Additional carved dormer heads are found on the courtyard elevations, which are mainly from the 1822 renovation, including a Tuscan porch in the re-entrant.
There is also a low two-storey range with a garage and rooms above, added to the north gable of Thunderton House, constructed of rubble with a slate roof. A low courtyard wall features a pair of heraldic beasts (horses), with a similar pair now incorporated into the walling of the close at 23-25 High Street, Elgin.
