Description
Tombae Farmhouse and steading form a unified hollow square, dating to the early 19th century and circa 1830. The farmhouse consists of two buildings: a two-storey, three-bay west-facing house, and a smaller, rear wing projecting to form an L-plan. The house is constructed of rubble with roughly tooled rubble dressings, and has modern pointing. A central door is flanked to the right by a modern entrance with French windows, and a small gable attic light is positioned above. The rear wing also has a central door, with smaller windows, one of which is blocked on the first floor. The main house has end stacks, and the entire structure is roofed with slate.
A substantial mid-19th century U-plan steading range extends from the north gable of the house, completing the hollow square. It is also built of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The steading incorporates segmental-headed cart bays, stables, and byres. A circular horsewalk at the north side of the steading serves as the foundation for a round rubble kiln with a conical roof, built in 1986. A pair of cheese presses are located at the east gable of the farmhouse.
Tombae Farmhouse was the home of Reverend James Gordon, the priest responsible for fundraising and building the Roman Catholic Church between 1827 and 1829. He also farmed at Tombae and advertised for boarders in the 1832 edition of the Catholic Directory.
