Description

The Picture House Cafe, located at 13 Church Street in Dufftown, was built in 1879. This two-storey and attic building features three bays and is constructed of rubble with contrasting painted ashlar dressings. The central bay is slightly advanced and has a pediment, with a wide segmental-headed entrance that is infilled with glazed doors. Giant pilasters flank the central bay, which is channelled on the ground floor and panelled on the second. The original shop windows on the ground floor have been significantly altered with various modern glazing.

On the first floor, there is a pedimented window in the center, flanked by bipartite windows in the outer bays, each with bracketed cills. The roof features two canted dormers, and the upper windows have two-pane glazing.

The building includes rusticated long short angle detailing, original decorative cast-iron rainwater goods, cast-iron finials, and a weathervane, as well as decorative cast-iron ridge brattishing. It has coped end stacks and a slate roof. The southern elevation has a rubble return.

At the rear, there is a plain harled cinema building, which was formerly the town hall, with a brick lean-to projection house added around 1930.

Inside, the cafe features a plain hall with seating from the 1930s.
