Description

Ballindalloch Railway Bridge is a mid-19th century single span iron bridge, built in 1863 by G McFarlane, Engineer, Dundee. The bridge spans the River Spey, which forms a boundary with Knockando Parish. It is approximately 250 feet in overall length and was constructed as part of the Strathspey Railway, later becoming part of the Great North of Scotland Railway, which transported whisky from the Strathspey area. The bridge features a single span lattice-girder construction of rivetted iron with short plate-girder access spans at each end, all with an ornamental cast-iron handrail. The abutments and piers are built of bullfaced rubble. The bridge's wrought-iron lattice girders consist of doubled hexagonal plate latticed sections. The railway line closed and was dismantled in 1960, but the bridge remains. A timber deck has since been added allowing its use by walkers and cyclists as part of the Speyside Way route. The bridge was previously a Scheduled Monument but was removed from the Schedule on 16 February 2006. It is visible on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map surveyed in 1869-70 and published in 1874.
