Description

The Bridge of Carron, dated 1863 and engineered by Alexander Gibb, with ironwork by William McKinnon and Co. of Aberdeen, is a wide, three-rib, single segmental span cast-iron road and railway bridge. The railway track is no longer in use. Lattice spandrels connect the arches to the carriageways. The bridge rises from bullfaced rubble abutment piers featuring triangular cutwaters which form canted refuges and are flanked by segmental-headed, single span flood arches. Approach wings have been built into the sloping river banks. A coped bullfaced rubble parapet runs along the masonry sections, incorporating ashlar band courses. The main arch has a span of approximately 150 feet, while the flood arches measure 25 feet. This is the last cast-iron arched bridge in Scotland built for railway traffic, representing a continuation of the Telford tradition of cast-iron segmental spans. The River Spey forms the boundary with Aberlour Parish.
