Description
68 John Street in Penicuik is a two-storey, three-bay house built in the later 19th century. It is constructed from tooled sandstone ashlar and features a base course and a band course between the ground and first floors, along with quoin strips.
The northeast elevation, which is the principal front, has a recessed modern door in the center at ground level. There are windows in the remaining bays on the ground floor and in the bays on the first floor.
On the southeast elevation, there is a two-bay gable with a later addition of a rendered forestair to the left. This elevation includes windows in the bays on the first floor and a door to the outer left at the first floor, along with windows in the northeast and southeast faces of the addition.
The southwest elevation was not visible in 1999, and the northwest elevation is obscured by an adjoining building.
The interior was also not seen in 1999. The property features a low, coped boundary wall to the street with modern decorative metal railings. The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge, along with a pair of modern skylights. There are cast-iron rainwater goods and gablehead stacks that are coped with circular cans.
