Description
51 John Street in Penicuik is a mid to late 19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical villa. The building is constructed from coursed, tooled sandstone and features raised polished long and short quoins. It has a base course and an eaves course topped with a cornice and blocking course, which includes a central tablet. The windows have raised margins and projecting cills.
On the southwest (principal) elevation, there is an advanced pilastered and corniced doorpiece that frames a deep-set four-panel timber door with a two-pane fanlight above. Windows are located on either side of the door and in each bay on the first floor.
The southeast and northwest elevations are harled and blank. The northeast (rear) elevation was not seen during the last inspection in 1999.
The villa features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate piended roof with lead ridges. The wallhead stacks are rendered and lined, coped, and topped with circular cans.
The boundary walls are low and made of coursed ashlar, with coping at the street and topped with modern railings.
