Description

17-18 The Square in Penicuik is a three-storey house with an attic, built in 1860. It features a symmetrical three-bay design made of tooled sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, a base course, and an eaves course. The building has raised margins and strip quoins, along with stone mullions.

On the southwest elevation, the central entrance includes a doorpiece with stop-moulded arrises and a corniced lintel, leading to a modern door topped by a two-pane rectangular fanlight. There are tripartite windows on either side of the entrance, and a window with a pediment and consoles is located at the center of the first floor. Flanking this are corbelled three-light oriel windows at the first floor, which continue to the second floor and break the eaves, featuring stop-moulded arrises at the first floor and columnar mullions at the second floor. A single window is centered on the second floor.

The northwest elevation is adjacent to another building, while the northeast elevation has not been seen since 1999. The southeast elevation displays a tooled, squared, and snecked gable with long and short quoins. There is a modern four-panel timber door with a shallow two-pane rectangular fanlight located at the outer right of the ground floor, along with windows on the outer right at both the first and second floors.

The interior has not been seen since 1999. The house features timber sash and case windows, predominantly four-pane. The roof is made of grey slate with a lead ridge and includes modern skylights. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, along with rendered and lined gablehead stacks that are coped and fitted with circular cans, and coped skews.
