Description

18 Bridge Street in Penicuik is an 18th-century, two-storey and attic, three-bay terraced house, featuring a two-bay 19th-century shop, situated on gently sloping ground. The building is constructed from tooled ashlar sandstone and includes a base course and an eaves course.

The principal elevation faces west and features a modern timber door with a rectangular fanlight above it, located centrally at the ground level. To the left, there is a two-bay timber shop front, which is flanked by pilasters and topped with a corniced lintel. This shop front includes a two-leaf, four-panel timber door with a plate glass letterbox fanlight on the left and a two-pane plate glass shop window on the right. There is also a window in the bay to the right at ground level, while the first floor has regular fenestration.

The south elevation has a blank rendered gable. The east (rear) elevation was not visible in 1999, and the north elevation adjoins another terrace.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge, along with a pair of regularly spaced slate-hung rectangular piend-roof dormers. Additional features include cast-iron rainwater goods, a gablehead stack with a cornice and circular cans, and coped skews.
