Description

3-5 West Street in Penicuik is a mid-19th century, three-storey, three-bay symmetrical house featuring a corniced shop at the ground level. The building is constructed from tooled ashlar with polished dressings, and the ground floor is painted. It has a base course, a cornice between the ground and first floors, and an eaves course, with long and short quoins.

The southeast elevation showcases a six-bay shopfront at the ground level, which includes a pair of mirrored three-bay shops with modern timber doors and glazed upper panels, along with blind rectangular fanlights in the penultimate bays on both sides. The remaining bays at the ground level have windows, while the floors above exhibit regular fenestration.

The southwest elevation features a rendered gable that is partly obscured by an adjoining two-storey bay. This bay includes a segmental-arched pend with a pair of recessed and mirrored vertically-boarded timber pedestrian gates, topped by a window on the first floor.

The northwest (rear) elevation was not seen as of 1999, and the northeast elevation is a rendered blank gable.

The interiors were also not seen in 1999. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, cast-iron rainwater goods, a rendered gablehead stack that is coped with circular cans, and coped skews.
