Description

30 Cairnbank Road in Penicuik is a mid-19th century lodge that has undergone later additions and alterations. This single-storey building features a four-bay T-plan design with picturesque gables. It is constructed from tooled sandstone ashlar, accented with polished ashlar margins and some chamfered arrises. The gables have decorative bargeboards and exposed rafter ends, along with decorative kingposts and pendants in two gables on the right side of the main elevation.

The principal elevation on the southeast side has a four-bay arrangement, featuring an irregular double gable to the right of center. To the right, there is a roll-moulded doorpiece with a recessed vertically-boarded timber door and decorative iron hinges, topped by a blank square wall tablet. A window is centered in the return to the right, while a four-light canted window with a stepped stone roof is located in the left gable. The left side also has enlarged windows, with one centered in the outer left gable.

The northeast elevation has a blank gable with a blank square wall tablet centered in the gablehead. The northwest (rear) elevation includes a single-storey wing that projects from the center. The southwest elevation features a modern conservatory centered in the left gable.

The interior was not seen in 1999, but it is noted to have predominantly timber diamond-pane glazing, along with some out-of-character replacement windows. The building has grey slate roofs with lead ridges and cast-iron rainwater goods, as well as coped ridge stacks with circular cans.
