Description

135-137 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century tenement building that stands three stories tall with an attic and features a four-bay design. At the rear, there is a piend-roofed stair tower. The eastern elevation is made of variegated pink and cream finely droved ashlar, which is painted at the ground floor, while the other elevations are harled. The building has a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, with raised cills.

On the eastern elevation facing High Street, there is a pend that is now glazed in the right bay. To the left, there is a two-leaf door with a fanlight, flanked by two multi-pane windows that are not aligned. The ground and first floors have regular fenestration.

The western elevation features three bays with a square stair tower that projects at the center. There is a door on the left return and three stair windows on the west side. The flanking bays have regular fenestration, except for the left bay at ground floor, which is blank.

On the northern elevation, there is a modern glazed door in a later opening to the left, along with four irregularly disposed windows. The southern elevation is blank above and beyond the gable of the adjoining building, Nos 131 and 133 High Street.

The building largely has a 12-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows. It has a steeply pitched grey slate roof with coped skews, harled gablehead stacks, and two piended slate-hung dormer windows on each pitch, all of which are canted except for the right dormer on the west pitch.
