Description
The Old Mill House in Dalkeith dates back to 1703 and was likely raised to three stories later in the 18th century. This former mill is a three-story, three-bay structure built of rubble that has been heavily repointed. It features largely replacement concrete lintels and cills, with an intermittent boulder rubble base course and some enlarged windows.
On the northeast elevation facing Newmills Road, there is a doorway at the center with a concrete surround and a modern door. The windows are regularly spaced, with taller windows on the first floor. In the right bay on the first floor, there is a rybat window inscribed with a mason's mark.
The southeast elevation has three bays, with an out-of-line doorway to the left in the center bay, also featuring a modern door. The fenestration is regularly disposed, with widened windows at the ground level and taller windows on the first floor. The original lintel of the window in the center bay on the first floor is inscribed with "1703".
The west elevation includes a window to the left at ground level and another window to the right on the first floor. The east elevation has a window to the left at both ground and second floors.
The building exhibits a variety of glazing patterns in its replacement windows, including some small-pane and some lying-pane styles. It has flattened gableheads, coped skews, and is topped with red pantiles. There are two modern outbuildings to the southeast and a rubble wall to the east.
