Description
Newmills Bridge, located on Newmills Road in Dalkeith, was originally built in 1756 and reconstructed by James Jardine in 1839. This road bridge runs on an east-west axis and features three spans with segmental arches. The side arches are blinded with recessed rubble masonry. The bridge is constructed from rubble, with channelled bull-faced piers and channelled ashlar pilasters extending from the impost to the parapet. The ashlar voussoirs, intrados, and parapet are notable features. There are panels above the central arch on both the north and south sides, with an inscription on the north panel that reads, "James Jardine, Engineer. James Lees, Builder. MDCCCXXXIX." Additionally, there is a band of iron hooks on the parapets.
