Description

68-70 Cardwell Road is a tenement block built around 1900, featuring three storeys and a mansard attic. It is situated on a corner site with a curved elevation and shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed of pink sandstone, with ashlar on the main elevations and squared, snecked stugged rubble at the rear, complemented by polished dressings. It has a continuous fascia and cornice with decorative brackets above the ground floor, a moulded string course above the first floor, and band cill courses at the first and second floors. The eaves cornice is topped with a tall parapet, and the curved corner bays are divided by plain pilaster strips.

The east elevation features a three-bay curved corner with a steep, finialled ogival roof, narrow dormers, and railings along the parapet. The ground floor has an altered shopfront that was formerly a bank, with regular fenestration above.

The north elevation facing Cardwell Road has four bays, with shops at ground level framed by panelled dies at the eaves to the parapet. The shopfronts have been altered, although the curved ingoes of No. 68 remain. The upper floors have bipartite windows and four irregularly spaced dormers.

The south elevation facing Manor Crescent also has four bays, with two bays on the right splayed into the corner featuring bipartite windows. To the left, there is a doorway leading to the common stair, flanked by a loading door, along with a single bipartite window and stair windows that have coloured border glazing. Dormers are present on the roof, with panelled dies at the parapet.

The building features timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The mansard roof is covered with purple slate and piend roofing with metal flashings, while green slate is used for the ogee roof. Gablehead stacks are present on the mansard roof, and there is a moulded eaves gutter.

Inside, the close is tiled and decorated with Art Nouveau flower motifs.
