Description
Fort Matilda Station, located on Newark Street in Greenock, was built in 1889 by James Miller for the Caledonian Railway, showcasing the Arts and Crafts style. This single-storey, symmetrical building features seven bays, with gabled bays that are slightly advanced and have applied timber-framing in their heads. The outer bays contain bipartite windows, while the remaining bays have four-light windows. A wide open porch sits under the central gable. The platform includes glazed end screens beneath a canopy that is part of the main roof. The building is topped with a slate roof and has prominent brick stacks that feature blind arched panels and cornices, reminiscent of the work of Norman Shaw.
