Description
The War Memorial at Helmsdale is a prominent, tall, square, three-stage clock tower built around 1920. It is constructed of bullfaced ashlar with tooled dressings. The lower stage features shaped, projecting diagonal buttresses with stumpy terminal pinnacles. A door is centrally positioned on the north facade. Above, each elevation contains a single, narrow, round-headed window displaying a clock face, each framed by a continuous hoodmould. Further above are three narrow, round-headed, louvred lancets. The wallhead is corniced and topped with an ogee finialled roof. Commemorative plaques record the names of those who died in the First World War (1914-18) and the Second World War (1938-45).
