Description

Helmsdale Railway Station comprises a station building, signal box, and footbridge, built between 1871 and the late 19th century as part of the Duke of Sutherland's Railway, now the Far North line. The station building is a two-storey, T-plan structure, similar in design to the station at nearby Golspie. It features a long re-entrant angle fronting the platform, which has been infilled as a verandah beneath a swept roof, supported by bracketed timber posts. The building is constructed from whitewashed rendered rubble, with a central entrance on the platform frontage, and glazing comprising 2- and 4-pane windows. It has coped end and wallhead stacks, and a slate roof with projecting eaves.

The signal box, dated 1894 and built by Dutton and Company, is a 'Type 1' design. It is constructed from timber weather-boarding, with a cover-strip construction, a projecting, half-gabled porch accessed by a timber forestair, a glazed frontage with multi-pane timber glazing, and decorative bargeboards, and a corrugated metal roof. The signal box is a notable example of an increasingly rare building type, and reflects the work of Samuel Dutton & Company, who built all the boxes between Invergordon and Georgemas. It shares design similarities with McKenzie and Holland’s Type 3 boxes found further south on the Highland Railway.

The late 19th-century footbridge is a standard Highland Railway cast-iron structure spanning the railway track, featuring a lattice balustrade. Together, the station building, signal box, and footbridge form a significant group of historic railway buildings.
