Description

Helmsdale Railway Station, built in 1871 for the Duke of Sutherland’s Railway and now part of the Far North line, is a well-detailed example of a North East Highland station, similar in design to that at nearby Golspie. The station building is a 2-storey, T-plan structure, with a long re-entrant angle fronting the platform. This section of the platform has been infilled as a verandah, covered by a swept roof supported by bracketed timber posts. The exterior is whitewashed rendered rubble with a central entrance on the platform frontage, featuring 2-pane and 4-pane glazing. The building has coped end and wallhead stacks and a slate roof with projecting eaves.

A signal box, constructed in 1894 by Dutton and Company to their ‘Type 1’ design, stands nearby. This timber-built structure has weather-boarding and cover-strip construction, a projecting, half-gabled porch accessible by a timber forestair, and a glazed frontage with multi-pane timber glazing. Decorative bargeboards adorn the structure, and it is topped with a corrugated metal roof. The signal box is an important example of a distinctive and increasingly rare building type that contributes to Scotland's industrial heritage. Dutton and Company built all signal boxes between Invergordon and Georgemas, a design characteristic of their early work and similar to those of McKenzie and Holland. Other ‘Type 1’ boxes by Dutton on the Far North line include Rogart, Ardgay, and Forsinard.

A late 19th-century cast-iron footbridge, of a standard Highland Railway design, spans the railway track and features a lattice balustrade. Together, the station building, signal box, and footbridge form a significant group of historic railway buildings.
