Masonic Lodge, Sutherland Street, Helmsdale

The building is a later 19th-century Masonic Lodge, a single-bay fronted hall set back from Sutherland Street in Helmsdale. It is constructed of tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. The central entrance features a double-leaf plank door with decorative cast-iron hinges, flanked by engaged columns supporting a pedimented entablature. The frieze of the entablature is decorated with paterae and Masonic insignia carved into the tympanum. Giant angle pilasters support ball finials, and there's a corniced wallhead. Moulded architraves and pediments frame both the entrance and the flanking windows, which feature two-pane glazing. A simple rear hall is present, along with a tall brick wallhead stack. The site is enclosed by a low, coped retaining wall with decorative cast-iron railing and a matching pedestrian gate.
