Description
Helmsdale Bridge is a substantial rubble bridge built in 1808-11 by Thomas Telford. It consists of two arches, with dressed stone arch rings, and features triangular cutwaters rising to parapet height, functioning as buttresses. The bridge has similarly detailed buttresses at each end, a string course made of ashlar, and a parapet cope. The approach to the bridge is sharply angled at the south end. Later additions include cast iron railings and lamp standards. The River Helmsdale was formerly known as the Ullie, and Helmsdale belonged to Loth Parish until 1841. The bridge is depicted in Telford’s Atlas of 1838 and is mentioned in the New Statistical Account of 1841.
