Commercial Hotel, Dunrobin Street, Helmsdale

The Commercial Hotel, located on Dunrobin Street in Helmsdale, is a three-storey and attic building dating to circa 1816, with a slightly later, wide, single-storey bowed extension rising full height at the west gable. The hotel is primarily rendered and lined to resemble ashlar masonry, with ashlar dressings, rusticated quoins, and decorative band courses situated above the first floor and in the bowed section above the ground floor. All surfaces are whitewashed.

The doorway has been repositioned and is a later addition. Three later bipartites (double-width windows) are visible in the second storey. Three large, piended dormers were added in the early 20th century. The west bowed gable features two windows on each floor, except for the first, with predominantly 2- and 4-pane glazing. The building has corniced end, ridge, and wallhead stacks, and a bellcast slate roof with a bowed and piended form at the west. Various later extensions are present at the rear.

The hotel was established in 1816 and is situated opposite the Telford bridge, completed in 1811. It stands on the original main road north through Helmsdale, which was realigned in the 1970s. The statutory address is now The Bridge Hotel, Bridge Street, Helmsdale.
